Clarity Decided: Inclusions, Graining, and the Boundaries of Flawless

Change log: Wave 3 first pass. The handout’s A11 list is only two articles — both about graining, which tells you what actually keeps graders up at night: not the black crystal everyone can see, but the structure nobody can photograph convincingly. This module is organized around that.

The rule — then the exception that is the real skill

The 11-grade scale (FL, IF, VVS1-2, VS1-2, SI1-2, I1-3) and the 10× rule — “Flawless indicates that there are no inclusions or blemishes visible at 10x magnification; I3 is for diamonds with inclusions obvious to the naked eye” (GIA’s own report-reading narration, video GIA-04, verified live) — are vocabulary every associate has. The research literature (A11’s pair, King et al. 2006 being the operative one) exists because the vocabulary leaks at both ends:

  1. Grading is relative to a size/position/relief framework, not counting. Number, size, relief, nature and position — GIA’s five stated factors — plus, per King et al., for some features “analysis that goes beyond visibility at 10× magnification.” That phrase is the thesis of the whole A11 assignment, so unpack it concretely below.
  2. Plotting is identification, not accusation. The plot diagram exists so “this unique plot helps identify a particular stone” (GIA-04/-03 narration) — a registry, not a rap sheet. Your clarity conversations should inherit that framing: the plot is why the report matches the stone, and grade is how visible it is.

Graining: the whitish and the mirror

King, Moses & Wang’s 2006 study is GIA’s definitive account of the two graining types that move grades and minds — “whitish” and “reflective” graining — in D-to-Z diamonds at the lab. What the abstract establishes (verbatim, safe to quote):

  • Graining “often is the only characteristic present in large, high-clarity, high-color diamonds” — which is exactly why the top of the market is where graining literacy pays: a 5-carat stone graded VVS2 with no visible inclusions is often not a mystery but a graining story.
  • Determining its impact requires analysis beyond 10× visibility: King, Moses & Wang (2006) established that internal whitish and reflective graining, when affecting overall transparency or visible at 10× as surface-reaching or reflective planes, can be the sole grade-limiting feature holding an otherwise Flawless/VVS stone to VVS2 or VS1/VS2. Determining its impact requires critical analysis of its effect on transparency and luster rather than simple inclusion counting.

Mechanism (textbook, consistent with the M02 formation module): graining is misoriented crystal structure along growth boundaries — slip planes and interrupted growth planes from the stresses of mantle growth, i.e., the scar of the story, not a foreign body. Reflective graining reads as thin mirror lines (light bouncing along the plane); whitish as faint cloudy lines/patches. The formation link is why graining correlates with type: it lives most in Ia goods; and it’s why some of the most expensive stones on earth (remember Cullinan I: “approximately D, potentially flawless” with faint internal graining — Scarratt & Shor) carry it.

For a valuation context (your IIA/GAVA audience): graining is also a cut-plan tell — it forces the cutter to angle the table against polishing direction; that interplay between graining plane and final proportions sometimes leaves the faint surface relief finish graders see (M06’s polish/symmetry section).

Clarity at the lab: the verified workflow (no invented drama)

From GIA’s own narrated tour (videos GIA-03/-04, both verified today), the sequence is: stone enters in cassette → natural/synthetic screen first → (for rounds) cut, polish, symmetry inputs → clarity at 10× loupe/microscope; inclusions noted; plot marked; treatment evidence checked — “any treatment will be noted on the report” → and, per the transcript: “an asterisk next to the color or clarity grade indicates the diamond has been treated.” Two implications for your floor:

  1. A GIA clarity grade already includes treatment surveillance; if clarity is gradeable at all, the grader has looked for filling/fracture evidence — that’s why “filled” is a report comment, not a silent grade.
  2. The asterisk convention is the disclosure hook (Module 12’s legal context: Overton 2004 in the handout, “Gem Treatment Disclosure and U.S. Law” — per FTC 16 CFR § 23.24 mandatory disclosure rules).

The SI/VS conversation, rebuilt from the literature’s logic

The A11 pair + video narrative support a cleaner professional script than the usual “eye clean” pitch. The lab’s factors, translated to counter language:

The literature’s addendum: “eye clean SI1” is a grade-plus-a-claim — the claim is real and checkable (look face-up, your eyes, no loupe), which is exactly the demonstration discipline GIA’s method was built on. When SI1 is not eye clean, you don’t argue; you reframe (“this is a grader-visible pin at the girdle, under a prong — here’s the plot, here’s what the grade says”). The plot diagram makes that a five-second, physical conversation instead of a ten-minute trust negotiation.

What the research does not say

  • Clarity ≥ beauty: the modeling module (M06) proved appearance lives in light behavior; 2016 research says CLIPPIR’s lack of inclusions contributes to why big pure stones grade high — but top-clarity is a scarcity story, not a sparkle story.
  • “More inclusions = weaker”: only durability-relevant features (feathers to surface, large fractures at girdle) are structural — and the lab’s durability component of cut, plus setting practice, already flags them.
  • “Laser drill holes = damage”: they’re a history (fracture-filled/drilled stones, Module 12) that reports note; the grader’s job is disclosure, the jeweler’s is maintenance.

Self-check
