AGS 0-10 vs. GIA Nomenclature: Translating Between Scales
The number that means nothing until you translate it
A client walks in holding her grandmother’s engagement ring and a diamond she is thinking about trading toward a new setting. She also has a printout from another jeweler quoting the loose stone she is comparing against yours. Your stone has a GIA report: Excellent cut, VS1 clarity, G color. Hers has an AGS report: cut 0, clarity 2, color 1.5.
She puts both sheets on the counter and asks the question you cannot dodge: “Is mine better than yours, or is he just using different words to hide something?”
Nothing on either sheet is fake, and neither jeweler is hiding anything. AGS and GIA are two different, both fully legitimate, laboratories that grade diamonds using two different notation systems. If you cannot translate between them in real time, you either freeze, guess, or default to “they’re basically the same,” and any of those three responses costs you credibility at the exact moment a client is deciding whether to trust you with a trade-in.
This module gives you the conversion logic, the history behind why two systems exist, the physical tools behind AGS’s methodology, and a script for having this conversation without sounding like you are reading from a chart.
Why this matters
Estate and trade-in business is a named growth category in this industry, and your ability to hold a confident, accurate conversation across grading systems is what separates a trusted advisor from someone reading a card. If you can already do this as a New Associate, you are ahead of your own career stage, and you are protecting your store’s margin on every trade-in where a client arrives holding a report your business does not normally issue.
This also matters for plain comparison shopping. Diamond retailers and independent labs increasingly issue reports on AGS, IGI, or GIA paper, and a client who has been shopping online has often seen more than one system before they reach your counter. Not knowing the other system’s vocabulary hands the conversation to whichever competitor does.
Two labs, two philosophies, one goal
GIA (Gemological Institute of America) was established in 1931 and created the 4Cs and the letter-and-number grading language most of the trade uses by default: D-to-Z color, FL-to-I3 clarity, and Excellent-to-Poor cut. AGS (American Gem Society) is a separate, also nonprofit, membership and grading organization, founded in 1934 by Robert M. Shipley, the same gemologist who founded GIA three years earlier. AGS Laboratories introduced diamond cut grading on its certificates in 1996, using a 0-to-10 numerical scale where 0 is the highest possible grade and 10 is the lowest, applied to cut, color, and clarity alike. AGS was built specifically to protect jewelry buyers from fraud and false advertising, and its numerical cut-grading system was one of the first to precisely measure how well a diamond was shaped, a factor the letter systems of the era did not directly address.
Both labs assess the same underlying physical facts about a stone. They simply describe those facts using different notation, and AGS’s cut methodology in particular goes further than GIA’s in one specific way worth knowing: AGS pioneered “light performance” grading, measuring brightness, fire, and contrast, using ray-tracing and physical scans rather than relying only on proportion measurements. In 2022, GIA acquired this light-performance grading technology from AGS and began incorporating it into its own reporting as an AGS Ideal Report addendum to a standard GIA grading report, which is a sign of how much the two labs’ methods have converged even while their labels stayed different.

AGS applies the same 0-10 numbering to all three factors, so a client’s “grade of 2” is meaningless on its own until you know which factor they mean.
ASET and Ideal-Scope: the physical tools behind AGS’s cut methodology
The reason AGS can grade cut on a finer 0-10 scale, rather than GIA’s five-band Excellent-to-Poor scale, is that AGS built its methodology around a specific piece of equipment: the ASET, or Angular Spectrum Evaluation Tool (sometimes called Angular Spectrum Evaluation Technology). Introduced by AGS in 2005, ASET is a color-coded viewing device that shows a diamond’s light performance as a map rather than a single number. When you place a diamond under an ASET scope, different colors appear depending on where light is going:

A close cousin of the ASET is the Ideal-Scope, a simpler reflector tool developed independently by gemologist Garry Holloway and widely used across the trade, including by AGS itself as a precursor concept to the ASET. The Ideal-Scope uses a two-color system rather than ASET’s three: red for all light return (both direct and reflected combined) and black for obscured light, with white indicating leakage under backlighting. Because the Ideal-Scope does not separate direct from reflected light the way ASET does, it gives a faster but less detailed read, which is why AGS’s own top-tier reports use the more detailed ASET imagery.

You do not need to own an ASET scope yourself to use this knowledge; the value is being able to explain, in plain language, why AGS’s cut grade is described as “light performance” grading rather than proportion grading alone, and why that gives AGS the ability to draw finer distinctions than GIA’s cut scale does.
Client: “What does ‘light performance’ actually mean? Everyone throws that term around.”
Associate: “It means the lab is measuring exactly where light goes when it hits the stone, using a scanning process, rather than just measuring the angles of the facets on paper. AGS uses a tool that color-codes the image: red and green mean light is coming back to your eye, and any white or dark patches mean light is leaking out the bottom instead. It’s a more detailed way of scoring how alive a stone looks.”
The cut scale: where the systems diverge most
Cut is where the two systems differ the most. AGS assigns eleven distinct cut grades (0 through 10), while GIA assigns five (Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor). That means AGS is drawing finer distinctions inside what GIA would call a single grade. As a general rule of thumb, a stone that GIA calls Excellent typically falls into AGS’s top two grades, 0 (Ideal) or 1 (Excellent), because GIA’s “Excellent” band is wider than either of AGS’s top bands.
Do not extend this general rule into a precise, grade-by-grade conversion table. Neither lab publishes an official crosswalk between the two scales, because their measurement methods are not identical: AGS’s light-performance methodology (brightness, fire, and contrast measured by ray-tracing) can place a stone differently than GIA’s proportions-based assessment. The one sentence worth memorizing for the floor: “AGS zero and GIA Excellent are close cousins, not the same grade, and AGS is generally the stricter, more finely graded of the two on cut.”

The two labs’ cut methods converged enough by 2022 that GIA now offers AGS’s own light-performance grading as an add-on to its reports, worth mentioning to a client who assumes the labs are rivals with nothing in common. That supplemental AGS Ideal Report carries an additional cost (reported at approximately $25 at launch) and is available for eligible D-to-Z natural and lab-grown round brilliant and select fancy-shape diamonds, ordered as a digital-only add-on to a standard GIA report.
The informal “Triple Zero” designation
If a client mentions “AGS Triple Zero” or “AGS 000,” they have likely encountered this term while researching online, and it is worth understanding precisely so you can neither overstate nor dismiss it. “Triple Zero” is trade slang, not an official single AGS grade printed as its own line on a report. It refers informally to a diamond that happens to receive a grade of 0 in all three AGS-graded categories at once:

A stone earning all three zeros simultaneously is genuinely rare and commands a corresponding premium, but the term itself is a colloquial shorthand the trade adopted over time, not something AGS Laboratories stamps onto a report as a single designation. Correcting this gently, rather than either inflating the term’s official status or dismissing it as meaningless, is the accurate position.
Client: “I read about ‘AGS Triple Zero’ stones online. Is that a special certification?”
Associate: “It’s a term the trade uses, but it’s not an official single grade on the report itself. It just means the stone happened to score a zero, the best possible grade, in all three categories AGS grades: cut, color, and clarity, at the same time. It’s genuinely rare and priced accordingly, but you’d see it as three separate zeros on the report, not one special stamp.”
GIA Triple Excellent versus AGS 000: are they the same tier?
A related comparison clients raise is GIA’s “Triple Excellent” designation (a diamond earning Excellent in cut, polish, and symmetry, sometimes marketed by retailers as “3 Ex”) against AGS’s Triple Zero. Both are top-tier informal shorthand, and both represent genuinely well-made stones, but they are not measuring identical things and should not be presented as interchangeable.
GIA’s Triple Excellent covers cut, polish, and symmetry, three components of craftsmanship and face-up appearance assessed through GIA’s proportions-based methodology. AGS’s Triple Zero, as described above, covers cut, color, and clarity, a different set of three categories entirely, assessed in the cut dimension using AGS’s light-performance ray-tracing methodology. The overlap between the two terms is limited to the general idea of “the best possible grade in multiple categories,” not a shared measurement approach.
Client: “Which is better, a GIA Triple Excellent or an AGS Triple Zero?”
Associate: “They’re actually not measuring the same three things, so it’s not a direct comparison. GIA’s Triple Excellent covers cut, polish, and symmetry, the craftsmanship side. AGS’s Triple Zero covers cut, color, and clarity, a broader combination including the stone’s color and inclusions. Both terms mean ‘top tier’ in their own system, but neither is simply a rebrand of the other.”
Color and clarity: the same numbering, different letters
Color and clarity follow the same 0-10 logic as cut on an AGS report, with 0 as the best and 10 as the worst. As with cut, resist the temptation to state a precise number-for-letter conversion. Neither AGS nor GIA publishes an official crosswalk for color or clarity any more than they do for cut, and the safest, most honest floor language is directional rather than exact.
Client: “Her diamond is a 1.5 in color. Is that better or worse than my G?”
Associate: “AGS runs zero to ten on color, with zero being the whitest. A grade of 1.5 puts her stone in a similarly high range to your G, in the near-colorless territory, but I can’t give you an exact letter-for-number match because the two labs don’t publish an official conversion between their scales. What I can do is put both stones face-up next to each other so you can compare them the way your eye actually will.”
If a client needs a precise, defensible cross-lab equivalency for an insurance or appraisal purpose, that is a job for a credentialed appraiser working from both physical reports, not a floor conversation built on a rule of thumb.
Reading an AGS report without a GIA reflex
When an AGS report lands on your counter, resist the urge to translate every number in your head before you respond. Read the report the way you would a GIA report: identify the stone first (shape, measurements, weight), then walk the three graded factors in order, saying the number and what it means in plain language before you compare it to anything.
- Confirm it is an AGS Laboratories report and not a store’s in-house grading, since only lab-issued reports carry the same evidentiary weight in a trade-in conversation.
- State each factor as “cut, color, clarity” in that order, giving the number and translating it once, out loud: “Cut zero, that’s their top grade.”
- Avoid saying a competing system’s report is wrong or inferior. Say instead, “AGS and GIA measure the same things and describe them differently, and both are respected labs.”
- If the client wants a precise appraisal-grade cross-reference for insurance purposes, refer them to a credentialed appraiser rather than estimating one at the counter.
Trade-in and comparison-shopping conversations
The moment this skill actually gets used is not a classroom quiz, it is a live trade-in appraisal or a client holding a competitor’s quote. Two patterns cover almost every version of that conversation.
Pattern one: the trade-in. A client brings in a stone with a report from a lab your store does not typically buy from, or from decades ago when grading practices were less standardized. Read the report exactly as it is written, translate the grades directionally into terms your store uses internally for valuation, and be transparent that a trade-in valuation also depends on your store’s own inspection, not just the paper.
Pattern two: the comparison shop. A client has a quote in hand from a competitor on an AGS-graded stone and wants to know if your GIA-graded stone is the better deal. Acknowledge that AGS grades more finely on cut (11 grades versus GIA’s 5) and that an Excellent GIA cut generally sits in AGS’s top two grades, then move the conversation to what a report cannot show: the two stones’ actual face-up appearance, which is where Module 1’s demonstration technique becomes the deciding factor rather than the paperwork.
Regional variation: AGS’s market presence
AGS Laboratories is a predominantly US-focused grading body, and its reports and membership network are considerably more common among American independent and guild jewelers than in other regions. Clients and colleagues in the UK, India, the Gulf, or other international markets are statistically far more likely to encounter GIA, IGI, or regional labs like HRD than AGS, since AGS’s guild membership structure (stores must qualify to become AGS members) is itself a US-centric institution. If you transfer to or serve clients from outside the US, expect this module’s content to come up less often, though the underlying skill of translating between any two grading systems remains transferable.
On the floor: applying it this week
- Monday: Print or save the AGS-to-GIA rough correspondence table above and keep it at your station for the first month, the same way you would keep a conversion chart for any two-unit system.
- Tuesday: Ask your manager or a senior associate if any current inventory carries AGS paper, and if so, read that report end to end using the four-step method above.
- Wednesday: Rehearse the trade-in script with a colleague playing a client who has an AGS report on a stone she wants to trade toward one of your GIA-graded pieces. Practice saying “I can’t give you an exact conversion” without sounding evasive.
- Thursday: Practice explaining, in one sentence, why two labs exist and neither is “the fake one.” This single sentence resolves the most common client anxiety in this conversation. Also rehearse the “Triple Zero” and “Triple Excellent” clarifications, since both come up in online research clients bring to the counter.
