Pearls: Types, Grading Vocabulary and Care

“Why is this strand three times the price of that one?”

Two pearl strands sit side by side in the case, similar size, similar color, and one costs three times as much as the other. A client asks why, and “one is just better quality” is not an answer, it is a dodge. Pearls have their own vocabulary and their own value factors, separate from the 4Cs you have already learned for diamonds, and this module gives you both, along with the manufacturing story behind why pearls look the way they do.

Why this matters

Pearls are graded on a completely different system than diamonds, and clients frequently assume the same logic applies, which creates confusion you have to resolve before you can sell confidently. Being able to name the pearl type in the case and walk through why one strand costs more than another turns a vague “it’s nicer” into a specific, defensible answer that closes more sales and prevents price objections rooted in misunderstanding.

Natural versus cultured pearls: a distinction worth making early

Before covering the four cultured pearl types you will sell every day, it is worth understanding the broader category they belong to, because clients occasionally ask if any pearls sold today are “real” in the sense of forming entirely without human involvement.

A natural pearl forms when an irritant accidentally enters a wild mollusk and the animal coats it in nacre over years, entirely without human intervention. A cultured pearl forms through the same biological process, nacre secretion, but a human technician deliberately inserts the irritant (a bead, a piece of tissue, or both) to trigger it. Both are entirely real pearls, made of the same material, through the same biological mechanism; the only difference is whether a person or an accident of nature started the process.

Natural pearls are exceptionally rare today and almost never appear in ordinary retail inventory; when a natural pearl of significant size and quality does surface, usually in an estate piece or at auction, it commands an extraordinary premium precisely because of that rarity. Virtually every pearl sold in a modern jewelry store, including everything covered in the rest of this module, is a cultured pearl.

Client: “Are any pearls actually real, or are they all fake and lab-made now?”

Associate: “All the pearls we sell are completely real, biologically formed pearls made of genuine nacre, cultured just means a person started the process by placing an irritant, rather than it happening by accident in the wild. It’s not artificial or fake in any sense, it’s the same natural material and process, just guided rather than random. True wild, unaided natural pearls do still exist, but they’re extraordinarily rare today and mostly found in estate and auction settings, not regular retail.”

How the modern cultured pearl industry began

The cultured pearl industry as it exists today traces to one person: Kokichi Mikimoto, a Japanese entrepreneur who, after years of failed experiments and near bankruptcy, successfully produced the first cultured pearls on July 11, 1893, by seeding an Akoya oyster with a small piece of mother-of-pearl. Those first pearls were hemispherical rather than fully round. Mikimoto patented his process in 1896 and went on to culture the first fully spherical pearl in 1905, and the company he founded remains one of the most recognized names in pearls today. This history is worth knowing not as trivia but because it explains why “cultured” does not mean “artificial”: the technique that made pearls widely available to buyers who previously could never have afforded a natural pearl was a genuine scientific and commercial breakthrough, not a shortcut around authenticity.

Bead nucleation versus tissue nucleation: why shape differs by pearl type

Module 7’s four cultured pearl types are not just different mollusk species, they are also cultured using two mechanically different processes, and this difference is the direct explanation for one of the seven GIA pearl value factors: shape.

Tissue-nucleated freshwater pearls are also entirely solid nacre all the way through, since there is no bead core, which is part of why a good freshwater pearl can rival a bead-nucleated pearl’s luster despite typically costing less; the trade-off is a lower likelihood of a perfectly round shape. A freshwater mollusk can also be implanted with multiple tissue grafts at once, sometimes producing several pearls from a single mollusk, whereas bead-nucleated species typically receive only one bead per animal.

Client: “Why are these freshwater pearls not perfectly round like the other strand?”

Associate: “It comes down to how they’re cultured. Freshwater pearls are usually grown without a round bead inside, just a small piece of tissue, so the shape develops more naturally and often comes out oval, button, or a baroque shape rather than perfectly round. The strand next to it, an Akoya, is grown around an actual round bead, which is why it comes out rounder more consistently. Neither method makes one ‘more real,’ they’re just different techniques.”

The four major types of cultured pearls

Almost every pearl you sell falls into one of four categories, and knowing which one you are looking at is the first step in any pearl conversation.

South Sea pearls in particular draw their premium from three compounding factors GIA names directly: their large size, thick nacre from a long growth period, and the limited, demanding growing conditions the Pinctada maxima oyster requires. That combination is why a South Sea strand routinely costs more than a same-sized Akoya strand.

The seven GIA pearl value factors

Where diamonds have the 4Cs, pearls have seven value factors, and every price difference between two strands traces back to one or more of these.

  1. Size. Larger pearls are generally rarer and more valuable, and size is driven by the mollusk species and the length of the culturing period.
  2. Shape. Round is the most prized and rarest shape; near-round, oval, button, drop, and baroque shapes follow in typical desirability, though baroque shapes have their own dedicated market. As explained above, shape is directly linked to nucleation method.
  3. Color. Both the body color and any overtone (a secondary sheen of color) affect value, and preference is partly regional and partly personal.
  4. Luster. The sharpness and brightness of the reflection on the pearl’s surface; this is often the single biggest visual driver of perceived quality.
  5. Surface quality. How clean the pearl’s surface is, from blemishes, spots, or irregularities.
  6. Nacre quality. The thickness and quality of the layered coating that gives a pearl its structure and luster; thin nacre is both a durability and a value concern.
  7. Matching. How well pearls are matched to each other within a finished strand, bracelet, or pair of earrings, since a well-matched strand takes considerably more sorting effort than a random assortment of similar pearls.

Look closely at these two side by side: this one has a sharper, mirror-like luster, and the surface is cleaner, fewer little marks. The strand is also more tightly matched, meaning every pearl was selected to look consistent next to its neighbors, which takes a lot more sorting than pearls that are just similarly sized.”

Grading scales are not standardized across pearl types

A detail worth knowing before you quote a grade to a client: pearl grading scales are not government-regulated the way diamond report standards are, and different pearl types are often graded on different retailer-specific scales. Akoya pearls commonly use an A-to-AAA scale, with a Hanadama designation reserved for the very finest Akoya pearls verified by an independent Japanese grading body. Tahitian, South Sea, and Freshwater pearls are often graded on an AA-to-AAAA scale instead. These letter grades are useful shorthand within a single retailer’s inventory, but they are not interchangeable between stores, since there is no single body enforcing what “AAA” means industry-wide. When a client compares a grade from your store to a grade from another retailer, be honest that the scales are not directly comparable, and fall back to the seven underlying value factors, which describe something concrete regardless of which retailer’s letter system is attached.

Nacre thickness: a regulated exception worth knowing

Nacre thickness is unusual among the value factors because, for one pearl type, it is not just a value factor but a legal requirement. Tahitian cultured pearls are required by regulation to carry a minimum average nacre thickness of 0.8mm. This is worth mentioning to a client buying Tahitian pearls specifically, since it is a concrete, verifiable standard rather than a subjective quality claim, and it is one of the few places in pearl grading where a specific number is backed by regulation rather than retailer judgment.

How a lab actually verifies natural versus cultured origin

For high-value estate pieces or antique pearl jewelry, a formal laboratory determination of natural versus cultured origin may be requested, and understanding the basic method (even though you will rarely perform it yourself) helps you explain the process credibly to a client considering an estate pearl purchase or appraisal.

GIA’s approach starts with X-ray radiography (sometimes abbreviated RTX), which penetrates the pearl to reveal its internal structure. Natural pearls typically display concentric ring structures with no solid nucleus, while bead-cultured pearls reveal a central core surrounded by nacre layers, and non-bead cultured (tissue-nucleated) pearls typically show irregular or linear internal growth patterns rather than a bead core. A second technique, energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence, excites the pearl to reveal its elemental composition; manganese levels are typically higher in freshwater pearls, while strontium levels are typically higher in saltwater pearls, which helps confirm freshwater-versus-saltwater origin and supports species identification.

You will not be expected to run these tests yourself as a New Associate, but knowing that a definitive, scientific method exists (and is not simply visual guesswork) is useful when a client asks how anyone could possibly tell a natural pearl from a cultured one just by looking, since the honest answer is that nobody reliably can by eye alone, which is exactly why this equipment exists.

A note on non-nacreous natural pearls

A small category of natural pearls, most notably conch pearls and melo pearls, form in mollusks that do not produce nacre at all, and instead have a distinctive porcelain-like, non-nacreous surface, often showing a flame-like structural pattern under close inspection. These are exceptionally rare, form only in the wild without any culturing process (there is no commercially viable way to culture them), and occasionally appear in high-end estate or auction contexts rather than typical bridal or fashion retail. You are unlikely to encounter one on a typical sales floor, but recognizing the name if a client mentions one (perhaps after reading about a rare, colorful pearl in an auction news story) is useful context.

Pearl treatments and disclosure

Like colored gemstones, pearl treatments must be disclosed under the FTC Jewelry Guides if the treatment is not permanent, requires special care, or significantly affects value. Bleaching, dyeing, and irradiation are common pearl treatments used to standardize or enhance color, and any of these should be disclosed to a client per your store’s compliance practice, the same standard covered in more depth in Module 9.

Basic pearl care

Pearls are organic and softer than most gemstones, so they need different care guidance than diamonds or hard colored stones. Apply perfume, hairspray, and lotion before putting pearls on, not after, since these products can dull the nacre’s luster over time. Wipe pearls with a soft cloth after wearing, and store them separately from harder gemstones that could scratch the nacre. Never use an ultrasonic cleaner on pearls.

Regional variation: pearl preferences by market

  • United States: Akoya remains the classic strand format for classic bridal and heirloom-style pieces, while South Sea and Tahitian have grown in popularity for larger, statement pieces.
  • United Kingdom: Classic white and cream Akoya strands retain strong appeal in traditional and heirloom-style British jewelry retail.
  • India and the Gulf: Pearls hold significant cultural and historical importance in Gulf markets specifically, tied to the region’s own historical natural pearl diving industry that predates the cultured pearl era; associates in these markets may find clients have specific regional knowledge or family history connected to pearls.
  • Cruise and travel retail: South Sea and Tahitian strands, with their larger size and striking color range, often perform well as a single, visually dramatic statement piece in compressed-time selling environments.

On the floor: applying it this week

  • Monday: Identify every pearl type currently in your case, using the mollusk and size clues from this module.
  • Tuesday: Practice naming all seven GIA pearl value factors from memory, in order.
  • Wednesday: Compare two pearl strands side by side and identify at least three value-factor differences between them out loud.
  • Thursday: Rehearse the price-difference script with a colleague using two real strands from your case, and practice explaining bead versus tissue nucleation in under 30 seconds.
  • Friday: Confirm with your manager how your store discloses any pearl treatments, and match that language going forward.
