The GIA Diamonds Deep Dive
Diamonds & Diamond Grading, mastered through GIA’s own research. 13 research-grade modules built from ~250 Gems & Gemology citations.
Why This Course Exists
GIA’s Diamonds & Diamond Grading course ships with a bibliography, not a textbook: a per-assignment list of Gems & Gemology articles (“optional; you will not be tested on it”) that represents 85+ years of gemological research, from Shipley’s 1941 color-grading paper to 2017 studies of treated red HPHT synthetics. Most students never read it.
This course reads it for you — it fetches the flagship articles of each assignment, digests them, and teaches diamond grading the way the research itself does it: mechanism first, vocabulary second.
What You’ll Master
- Narrate the origin of the 4Cs and the grading vocabulary, and why standardization changed diamond commerce
- Explain diamond formation, exploration, and mining at the level of a GIA laboratory’s own published science
- Trace how each grade on a GIA report (cut, clarity, color, carat) was researched into existence — proportion ranges, graining, masterstones, the geometry of brilliance
- Identify and explain simulants, lab-grown diamonds, and treatments using the detection features the G&G literature established
- Read any future Gems & Gemology article with the vocabulary to understand it, using the course bibliography as the entry point
