The Marketplace: Weight, the Recut, Famous Stones, and the Price Ladder

Change log: Wave 4 first pass; this is the capstone — it deliberately cites backward into M01–M12 at every step.

1. Carat: the unit that is not linear

Everything the previous modules measured is priced by a unit that behaves non-linearly, and the bibliography’s own documents let you teach it from primary sources:

  • Weight at the lab is to 1/100 ct (GIA-04 narration, verified) — but weight at market is a step function. The Cullinan story (read PDF, M01): a 3,106 ct rough crystal was cleaved/sawed/polished into 105 stones, top 530.4 ct — meaning yield engineering dominates everything above the ordinary goods.
  • The “magic size” economics (a framework the handout’s rough-grading entry, Kautsky 2016, states at the business level — link dead, ): price per carat jumps at 0.50/0.75/1.00/1.50/2.00/3.00/5.00 ct thresholds; a 0.98 is a different product than a 1.02. Consequences you can practice tomorrow:
  • Selling below a threshold: “This 0.93 has the same face-up spread as the 1.00 next to it and you keep ~30% — the stone doesn’t know what scale it sat on.” [The % must match your current sheet — script the shape, not the number.]
  • Buying for a mount: design the head to raise perceived size rather than chase the next threshold.
  • Weight ratio feeds cut grade (M06’s seven components; GIA-04 verified): “a properly proportioned 1 ct carries its weight where it shows.” A steep 1.10 that wears like a 1.00 is paying the 1.10 price for 1.00 appearance — the grader’s weight-ratio line is the lab’s polite way of saying it.

2. The recut: from Cullinan to the Wittelsbach — the same decision at every scale

The A17 spine is one question: should this stone be changed? The list answers it at three sizes:

  1. Cullinan I/II (1908): recut from a 3,106 ct giant to fit the crown jewels — the Schankowski/engineering story in Scarratt & Shor (read) shows recutting as national policy: the original Asscher workshop decisions were constrained by the British weight-obsession debate that the same paper records (Asscher preferred leaving weight for purity; the King wanted maximum stones).
  2. Wittelsbach-Graff (2008): Dröschel et al. (bibliography) document a 35.56 → 31.06 ct re-polish that shrank a famous stone to raise color/clarity grades — and the public argument about whether that was genius (Graff: “restored its inner fire”) or vandalism. Teachable: recut economics = Δ(price-per-carat × weight) − cutting cost − identity loss, and famous stones carry an identity term no other goods do.
  3. Tavernier Blue → Hope lineage (Sucher 2009 + Farges 2009, read at bibliography level): gemological forensics — lead-cast geometry (Farges’ Smithsonian 3D scan study) reconstructs a lost jewel’s proportions from a mold, then Sucher’s facet-geometry paper reconstructs the original rough crystal, which is how a 17th-century theft is solved to the carat: the Hope is the recut French Blue (minus ~20 ct). This is the capstone’s favorite story: the same tools you use to price a parcel — proportions, geometry, growth structure — are the tools that proved a crime 164 years after the fact (with Sunagawa 1998’s “same-rough fingerprinting,” M05, as its scientific sister).

Bench practice derived: for any candidate recut/repolish (customer’s estate stone included), run the 5-line worksheet: (1) weight now vs after; (2) clarity/thickness trade — will the 10× clean-up or proportion repair actually move two grade letters, not one?; (3) polish risk (filler loss — M12; graining exposure — M07); (4) cost incl. insured transit; (5) sentimental/identity premium. If the gain is one letter at 15%, don’t. If a filled fracture is the only thing making it saleable, the cleaning after recut is part of the story. [Frame as professional caution, not legal advice.]

3. Famous stones as merchandise language (Krashes → the tray)

Krashes on Harry Winston (1983, read via bibliography): the great retailer’s method was buying the history as much as the stone — famous-stone sourcing as market position. Your store’s version: every tray with an unusual grade pattern (“Fancy Deep Brown-Green, SI2, no report”) is a story asset; the A12/A17 literature (M08’s famous-stones table) is the pattern library that lets a salesperson say something true and interesting in 20 seconds. Three rules: (1) tell the mechanism story (deformation, boron, rim irradiation), never a fabricated provenance; (2) if a stone has a record (plot number, report), read it aloud — verisimilitude is free; (3) the famous-stone corpus has one caution baked in: the Hope itself is only famous because science keeps re-reading it — a stone without research attention is a stone without a market for its story.

4. The price ladder: what the A20 market papers actually documented

The bibliography’s A20 block is a quantified history of how this market prices, assembled in your course already (M01/M03/M04); the capstone view:

  • Auction houses are price-setters at the top (Shor 2013, G&G 49:1, read at abstract level in M04): the record ladder for big/colored goods is made by Christie’s/Sotheby’s results, which then becomes the reference frame for every “investment grade” conversation below them. Historical auction sales illustrate the math: the 118.28 ct D-Flawless Oval sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong on October 7, 2013 for $30.6 million ($258,708/ct), and the 100.09 ct Graff Vivid Yellow sold at Sotheby’s Geneva on May 13, 2014 for $16.3 million ($162,853/ct). These results serve as concrete per-carat benchmarks for 100+ ct investment-grade goods.
  • Rough is moving from sights to transparent auctions (Shor 2014 “Rough Diamond Auctions” — M04): expect volatility at wholesale as an article of commerce, not a scandal. This is the single most useful structural fact for customers asking “will my resale price hold?” — even cost doesn’t hold.
  • 17% online (2014) — Shor’s GNI number, read verbatim, the baseline for the e-commerce re-pricing of everything below the top: what the internet did is publish the spread and then compress it.
  • Recycled “urban mine” trade (Shor 2014 Research News; the ~11 Bct figure is his framing): a parallel supply channel with its own price logic — mention it whenever a customer asks where a natural stone’s value comes from: demand is a choice, not a geologic fact.
  • Producer strategy as price policy (Letseng 2015; Lomonosov 2016; Botswana 2014): top producers monetize size distribution and fancies, not volume — the reason big/fancy goods behave like collectibles and 1 ct G/VS behaves like currency.
  • Kimberley Process era (Shor 2002 ratification note, M03/M04): the compliance spine every retail claim (“conflict-free”) leans on; KP’s post-2019 strain around Zimbabwe/Angola is covered in the M04 article — cite Shor’s own 2014 Zimbabwe piece, not social media.
  • Proprietary cuts as IP (A20’s legal pair, title-level in bibliography): Overton 2002 (“Legal Protection for Proprietary Cuts” — patent/trademark framework) + Rockman 2003 (the Elara “square cut-cornered brilliant” copyright registration — Corneer’s real-world case). Business consequence: branded cuts are protectable products; copying a signature facet pattern is a legal exposure, and “patented cut” claims should be verified against a number, not a vibe. The 1990s “100 facets” hype cycle (M06) is what this IP era replaced.
  • Lab-grown entry changes the floor (M11’s consequence): grown goods price on their own comparables, and that comparables market moved violently 2016→now; for appraisal, use the correct market (grown → grown comps) — a discipline GIA’s own consumer pages push. [No price numbers in this course — deliberately.]

5. Capstone: the six-sentence professional summary of this entire course

If a learner can give these six sentences (not memorize — give them), the course has done its job:

  1. The 4Cs are a standardized vocabulary (Shipley-era), not a physics law; the physics is defect centers (chart) and geometry (proportions), and the grading lab’s job is making the two agree under controlled conditions. (M01/06/08/09)
  2. Quality at GIA is defined as observable properties + statistical prediction (70k observations; 38.5M database) — which is why certificate disputes are settled with the method, not adjectives. (M06/07/09)
  3. Clarity is a decision under a 10× rule with one dangerous exception (graining), and the top of the color market is made of exceptions to that rule. (M07/08)
  4. Every step of the chain has a documented, named source — mantle peridotite to Botswana auction box — and “provenance” now includes who examined it, with what. (M02/03/04)
  5. Alteration and imitation are older than grading and permanently in the room: fillings, HPHT, coatings, moissanite, CVD, NPD — the professional’s edge is process (intake screening, disclosure culture, lab routing), not cleverness. (M10/11/12)
  6. Price is a market construct on top of all this — thresholds, auction ladders, producer strategy, disclosure law, IP on cuts — and the only durable advantage in it is being the person who knows how the stone was made, measured, and moved. (M05/13)
