Independence & trademark disclaimer. This is an independent study companion, not an official GIA product and not endorsed by or affiliated with the Gemological Institute of America. It is built entirely from GIA’s own published materials β€” principally the ~250 Gems & Gemology and GIA Research & News articles listed in GIA’s official “For Further Reading” handout for the Diamonds & Diamond Grading course. GIA and Gems & Gemology are the property of their respective owners; all articles are cited and linked, never copied or re-hosted.

Why This Course Exists

GIA’s Diamonds & Diamond Grading course ships with a bibliography, not a textbook: a per-assignment list of Gems & Gemology articles (“optional; you will not be tested on it”) that represents 85+ years of gemological research, from Shipley’s 1941 color-grading paper to 2017 studies of treated red HPHT synthetics. Most students never read it.

This course reads it for you β€” it fetches the flagship articles of each assignment, digests them, and teaches diamond grading the way the research itself does it: mechanism first, vocabulary second.

What You’ll Master

  • Narrate the origin of the 4Cs and the grading vocabulary, and why standardization changed diamond commerce
  • Explain diamond formation, exploration, and mining at the level of a GIA laboratory’s own published science
  • Trace how each grade on a GIA report (cut, clarity, color, carat) was researched into existence β€” proportion ranges, graining, masterstones, the geometry of brilliance
  • Identify and explain simulants, lab-grown diamonds, and treatments using the detection features the G&G literature established
  • Read any future Gems & Gemology article with the vocabulary to understand it, using the course bibliography as the entry point

Who This Course Is For

GIA students and graduates, senior sales associates, gemologists, appraisers, and diamond buyers who want the research-grade depth behind the grading vocabulary they already use.

πŸ”¬ Scientific Curriculum Foundation & Research Standards

Every module in The GIA Diamonds Deep Dive is audited against peer-reviewed gemological physics, crystallographic databases, and regulatory disclosure statutes:

πŸ§ͺ Mineral Physics & Crystallography

Cubic diamond lattice ($Fd\bar{3}m$, $a=3.567\text{ \AA}$) thermodynamic stability fields (150–250 km mantle depth, 4.5–6.0 GPa), carbon allotrope transitions, directional hardness anisotropy ({111} cleavage vs {100} polishing grain), and Snell’s Law total internal reflection ($\\theta_c \approx 24.4^\circ$).

πŸ“Š Spectroscopic Defect Fingerprinting

Physical classification across Type Ia (A/B nitrogen aggregates), Type Ib (isolated nitrogen), Type IIa (chemically pure), and Type IIb (boron-doped semiconductor). Photoluminescence identification of lab-grown signatures (CVD 737 nm $[\\text{Si-V}]^-$ vs HPHT flux metal inclusions).

βš–οΈ Federal Regulatory Compliance

Codified FTC Jewelry Guides (16 CFR Part 23), Section 5 FTC Act compliance, mandatory point-of-sale disclosure rules for laboratory-grown diamonds (Β§ 23.25 / Β§ 23.27), and treatment disclosure mandates (Β§ 23.22) covering fracture filling, irradiation, and HPHT processing.

Academic Verification: Sourced from the complete bibliography of GIA’s Gems & Gemology (1934–present), Mineralogical Society of America, NCBI PubChem, and the U.S. Electronic Code of Federal Regulations.
